Welcome to the Shadow City

Citadels: Shadow City is a strategic, turn-based card game built around three things Mac players tend to love in tabletop-inspired adaptations: smart resource management, satisfying city-building decisions, and the constant tension of hidden information. Set in a dark fantasy medieval world, you’re not just racing to construct a skyline—you’re racing to become the Master Builder while everyone at the table tries to predict, misdirect, and dismantle your plans.

The hook is simple: build the most valuable city before your opponents do. The way you get there is anything but. Every round is a new puzzle of roles, timing, and reading your rivals.

Trust No One: Hidden Roles and Deception

At the start of each round, players secretly draft a character role. This is where Shadow City differentiates itself from straightforward engine-builders: your identity changes constantly, and so does your leverage.

Roles include figures such as the cunning Spy, the wealthy Guildmaster, the ruthless Inquisitor, and the unpredictable Alchemist. Each one grants a distinct special ability—sometimes accelerating your economy, sometimes protecting your districts, and sometimes letting you directly disrupt another player’s turn.

The result is a game of layered mind-games. You’re not only choosing the best role for your current hand of district cards and gold—you’re also choosing the best role for what you want your opponents to think you’re doing. The strongest plays often come from reading the table: who is suddenly playing cautiously, who is hoarding gold, and who is about to complete a critical district category for synergy points.

Build Your Empire: Districts, Categories, and the 8-District Finish Line

Your city grows by spending gold to construct district cards, each contributing value and often influencing the direction of your build. A key strategic layer comes from balancing district categories: Trade markets, Religious abbeys, Military fortresses, and Science academies are more than just flavor—they define how efficiently you can generate income, defend your progress, and pivot when your best plan gets countered.

There’s also an ever-present tempo question. Being the first player to build 8 districts triggers the end of the game, but finishing first doesn’t automatically mean winning. Final scoring rewards the city with the highest total value and strong category synergies—so sometimes the correct move is to slow down, protect your lead, and maximize points, rather than sprinting to eight and hoping the math works out.

How It Feels on Mac

Citadels - Shadow City is well-suited to Mac play sessions because it’s turn-based and decision-dense: ideal for trackpad-and-keyboard play at a desk, but also friendly to controller setups and living-room Macs thanks to its accessibility options. The relatively small storage footprint makes it a painless install, while online play benefits from a stable broadband connection—especially when matches hinge on timing, reads, and tactical role selection rather than reflexes.

Who Should Play It?

If you enjoy card games where the “correct” move changes based on incomplete information—especially games that reward bluffing, deduction, and opportunistic sabotage—Citadels - Shadow City is an easy recommendation. It’s equally at home as a solo strategy fix against bots or as a multiplayer rivalry-generator where grudges carry over from one round to the next.

In the Shadow City, the skyline is temporary. The deception is permanent.
