Patch 36.6.3 is out now
Blizzard has shipped Hearthstone Patch 36.6.3, delivering a pair of Standard balance changes alongside a sweeping set of Battlegrounds adjustments. The stated intent is to smooth out a few outliers in Standard while dialing back the early-game tempo of the new Aberration minion type in Battlegrounds as the game approaches Reign of the Black Empire.
As always for MacGaming.com readers: this is gameplay and balance news first and foremost. Blizzard’s announcement focuses on tuning and matchmaking variety; it does not make any new statements about platforms, macOS-specific features, or Apple Silicon support.
Hearthstone (Standard): targeted nerfs before the next shake-up
In Blizzard’s developer commentary, the team says the current Standard meta is “in a healthy spot,” but calls out Dragon Warrior and Attack Druid as key outliers. With Reign of the Black Empire and the arrival of the Old Gods expected to disrupt the format significantly, Blizzard says it’s taking a measured approach and will monitor the post-launch environment.
The patch changes two cards:
Windpeak Wyrm: Kindred discount reduced (now costs (2) less instead of (3) less).
Infest the Scullery: now summons two random 2-Cost minions instead of two random 3-Cost minions.
Battlegrounds: Aberrations get hit, variety returns
The biggest story in 36.6.3 is Battlegrounds. Blizzard’s dev notes explain that most changes are aimed at bringing Aberrations down a notch—specifically reducing early tempo while keeping them viable later. A key lever here is how often Deities appear, and how punishing their damage can be once they do.
Two headline systems changes stand out:
Deities now require 4 friendly Aberration deaths per combat to summon (up from 3), reducing early Deity frequency.
Aberrations are no longer guaranteed in every lobby. Instead, they move to a standard 50% chance to appear. Blizzard also notes a forward-looking policy change: new minion types are expected to have a one-week guarantee (down from two), while new Heroes will remain at two weeks.
Minion pool updates
Several minions rotate in and out of Battlegrounds:
Returning: Ship Master Eudora, Eternal Tycoon, Jailbird Juggernaut.
Removed: Briarback Drummer, Timewarped Thorncaller.
Notable Battlegrounds balance highlights
The patch includes a long list of stat, tier, and text adjustments across multiple strategies. Here are some of the changes most likely to impact common lines and lobby pacing:
Sha of Fear shifts from bigger buffs to sturdier baseline stats, reducing the scaling per Tavern spell.
Abyssal Envoy takes a sizable stat reduction (now 2/2), cutting early board impact.
Nightmare Corroder is reworked from Deathrattle value into end-of-turn generation, changing how quickly it snowballs and how it plays with tempo.
Auto Reveille changes significantly, now magnetizing a Volumizer to itself and giving you a copy, adjusting how Mech lines can spike.
Thorned Trailblazer moves to Tier 3 (from Tier 4), potentially making its build-around plans come online earlier.
Eternal Summoner drops to Tier 5 (from Tier 6), which can reshape late-game access and damage pacing in highroll lobbies.
Young Murk-Eye changes from triggering a single adjacent Battlecry to triggering both adjacent Battlecries, opening up different positioning and doubling-down on certain combos.
Ultraviolet Ascendant gains durability and improved team-wide buffs, strengthening some Elemental boards.
Ship Master Eudora returns at Tier 5 with reduced stats and a smaller Deathrattle buff, a meaningful adjustment for anyone who remembers its prior top-end power.
Deities: moved down to reduce hero damage
Beyond the summon requirement change, Blizzard also moves the Deities to lower tiers to reduce damage taken from Aberration boards:
C’Thun: Tier 1 (from Tier 3).
Y’Shaarj: Tier 1 (from Tier 3).
Tavern spells, Dark Gifts, and Trinkets: lots of knobs turned
36.6.3 continues Blizzard’s midseason theme of tuning the surrounding ecosystems that determine how quickly players spike in power.
Tavern spells see shifts like Easterly Winds offering a slightly larger buff, Blood Gem Barrage moving to Tier 4 and doubling its per-refresh gem value, and Butchering costing more but granting substantially more Attack scaling for Undead.
Dark Gifts are slowed down in availability: Spell Siphon appears later (minimum turn 5), and Transcendence also appears later (minimum turn 8).
Trinkets get a wide set of cost-only adjustments across both Lesser and Greater tiers, plus specific redesigns. Blizzard also says the elevated appearance rate for new Trinkets has been removed, returning them to normal odds.
Quality-of-life and rule tweaks
Blizzard also calls out several general adjustments: Sinister Invitation now offers higher-tier minions more frequently; Maw Caster can no longer be offered Echoing Voice; and certain hero offerings are restricted in Aberration lobbies. There are also VFX updates to make Living Azerite and Seafood Stew resolve more quickly.
