New Heroes of the Storm patch goes live

Blizzard has published the Heroes of the Storm Live Patch Notes dated September 28, 2026, bringing a headline addition for Nexus regulars: a brand-new Hero, Xal’atath. The update also includes map tuning, a wide balance sweep across several Heroes, and a set of bug fixes. A follow-up hotfix on September 29, 2026 addresses early issues tied to the new release.

As always for MacGaming.com readers: Blizzard’s post focuses on gameplay changes and content. It does not make any new claims about macOS or Apple Silicon support, so we’re treating this strictly as game news and patch coverage sourced from Blizzard’s notes.

New Hero: Xal’atath

The major content drop here is Xal’atath, arriving with a kit centered on marking targets, repositioning, and layering area denial via a summoned object called the Dark Heart.

Core ability highlights (per Blizzard):

Shadow Mark (Q): Fires a Void Orb, dealing damage with extra damage at the center. Hitting an enemy Hero or Structure with the center applies a Shadow Mark for 4 seconds, Revealing them and pulling the Dark Heart and Void Minions toward them.

Dark Heart Ritual (W): Summons the Dark Heart to pulse damage over time, then pursue marked targets and detonate on contact for a bigger burst (with extra damage to the marked target).

Void Step (E): A triple-teleport in a triangular pattern that ramps Basic Attack damage while active (up to +30%), with an option to end early.

Void Volley (Trait): After 5 Basic Attacks, Xal’atath can fire a 6-orb barrage at a target area. It includes a stacking quest that increases Void Volley damage, with milestone rewards at 20/60/100 stacks—plus a harsh penalty for dying that becomes less punishing after the first milestone.

Heroics and late-game power spikes

At Level 10, Blizzard lists two Heroics:

Void Eruption (R): A chargeable, traveling orb that blinds on contact ticks and ends in an explosion—stronger if you fully charge it.

Void Convergence (R): A channeled portal that spawns Void Minions and slows enemies nearby, with a limit of one active portal by default.

At Level 20, Xal’atath’s upgrades lean into multi-orb pressure, portal uptime, and additional mark access. Notably, Rift Invasion removes the portal life duration, raises the portal limit to 2, and increases minion potential, while Dueling Orbs adds an extra Shadow Mark charge with a cooldown gate between uses.

Hotfix (Sept 29, 2026): bundle delivery and exploit fixes

Blizzard also notes a 9/29/2026 hotfix with several Xal’atath-related corrections, including:

Fixing an issue where some players who bought a pre-purchase bundle didn’t receive Xal’atath, addressing an exploit with Xal’atath’s ultimate, correcting a Level 20 Void Convergence portal issue where it could lose life, and adjusting Dark Heart colors to improve enemy visibility.

Collection: Dark Twilight Xal’atath Bundle

On the cosmetic side, Blizzard lists a new bundle featuring the Xal’atath Hero, Twilight Xal’atath Skin, and a Sin’dorei Phoenix Mount.

General changes: UI and communication

Blizzard’s patch notes mention an updated homescreen and startup music, plus a practical quality-of-life improvement: the ability to ping your Healing Fountain cooldown. For coordinated play, that kind of quick status callout can matter as much as raw balance changes.

Map Updates: Garden of Terror gets pacing tweaks

Garden of Terror is the sole map called out in Blizzard’s “Map Updates” section. Shambler health and damage now start 25% below previous values and gradually return to their previous values over the course of the match. In practice, that’s a clear early-game pacing adjustment that should change how punishing early objectives feel, while preserving late-game threat.

Balance Update: notable Hero adjustments

Blizzard’s balance list is broad; here are the most relevant bullets for quick scanning:

Abathur: Bombard Strain’s health decay reduction lowered (50% to 40%); Survival Instincts now gives 50% damage reduction vs non-Heroes instead of +100% health.

Alexstrasza: Base health increased (1698 to 1780). Flames of Fury Mythic requirement reduced, while Overprotective healing-to-shield conversion reduced (70% to 50%).

Garrosh: Unrivaled Strength damage bonus reduced; In For The Kill damage bonus increased; Oppressor spell power reduction slightly reduced; Bloodcraze duration increased; Double Up armor duration increased.

Mal’Ganis: Night Rush cast time reduced; Vampiric Touch healing improved (both vs Heroes and non-Heroes).

Qhira: Blood Rage bonuses reduced; Fatal Wounds bonus increased; Pulsing Pain damage increased; Lingering Ailment armor reduction toned down.

Whitemane: Desperate Plea mana cost increased; Intercession cooldown increased; Radiance healing increased.

Yrel: Vindication mana cost increased; Aldor Peacekeeper damage reduction buffed and extended; Velen’s Chosen per-stack bonus lowered but stack count increased; Seraphim cooldown increased.

Bug fixes

Blizzard also lists multiple fixes, including a Volskaya Foundry fort wall health inconsistency, timing and behavior fixes for Anduin and Malfurion, changes to Ragnaros interactions around “Heroic Difficulty,” and a fix to Xul skeletons sometimes not dealing damage.
