A new way to start your Azeroth journey
Blizzard is rethinking how players enter its next World of Warcraft experience. In a Blizzard News post updated on October 22, the company outlined how World of Warcraft: Forever will move away from the classic realm-selection screen and instead have players choose a ruleset up front: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, and Hardcore (with Hardcore arriving sometime after launch).
For MacGaming.com readers who bounce between communities—or simply want to avoid the usual launch-week anxiety of picking a “right” realm—Blizzard is positioning rulesets as larger, self-contained ecosystems designed to keep the world populated while aligning you with players who want the same style of play.
[Updated 10/22] Roleplay-PvP confirmed for launch
Blizzard’s 10/22 update adds a notable option: Roleplay-PvP is now expected to arrive with the launch of WoW: Forever on November 4, and Blizzard also plans to make it available during Early Name Reservation starting Tuesday, October 27.
What each ruleset means
According to Blizzard, the available rulesets are intended to map to familiar WoW playstyles:
Normal: The baseline experience focused on questing, exploration, cooperative play, and optional PvP.
PvP: Built for players who want contested zones to feel dangerous, with more open-world conflict.
Roleplaying: A space for players leaning into in-character play and RP-focused communities.
Hardcore: A higher-stakes mode where death has lasting consequences; Blizzard says this ruleset will be available after launch.
Grouping, battlegrounds, and boundaries
The big practical change is that rulesets aren’t just labels—Blizzard says each one is its own distinct space. That means grouping, dungeons, and raids are limited to players within the same ruleset, and cross-ruleset grouping won’t be supported.
Battlegrounds may pull players from multiple rulesets, but Blizzard notes that Hardcore remains separate.
Blizzard also reiterates that factions remain separate. Horde and Alliance players still can’t group together, keeping faction identity (and conflict) central to the WoW: Forever structure.
Switching rulesets isn’t a toggle
If you’re the type of player who likes to sample different rule environments, Blizzard’s approach comes with a catch: switching rulesets means starting fresh. Blizzard says you can’t freely hop between rulesets; to play under another ruleset, you’ll need to create a new character there.
Hardcore gets additional guardrails. Blizzard says Hardcore characters will stay in an enclosed ecosystem, but if a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer out to another ruleset (including PvP). Blizzard also describes a one-way flow for account progression: achievements and rewards earned in Hardcore can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets will not flow back into Hardcore.
Language preferences and PvP faction limits
Blizzard says players will be able to set an account-wide “Preferred Online Language” option (with a 24-hour cooldown between changes) so you encounter more players with the same language preference.
For the PvP ruleset specifically, Blizzard says faction balance will be managed with systems similar to Season of Discovery, including potentially limiting new character creation for a faction if needed. Blizzard also states that on the PvP ruleset you can only create characters for one faction—pick Alliance first, and you can’t also roll Horde there (and vice versa). Normal, Roleplaying, and Hardcore allow characters from both factions.
What Mac players should keep in mind
Blizzard’s announcement focuses on gameplay structure rather than platforms or system requirements. As of this update, Blizzard has not used this post to confirm macOS support, Apple Silicon support, or Mac-specific release details for WoW: Forever. If you play WoW on Mac today, this is still a meaningful design shift to watch because it changes how communities form, how friends coordinate, and how your characters are siloed for endgame activities—regardless of platform.
