Blizzard has flipped the switch on Reign of the Black Empire, the latest Hearthstone expansion, bringing 135 new collectible cards into the game. The update centers on the Old Gods at peak power, a brand-new deckbuilding constraint around them, and a fresh keyword designed to let players craft bespoke minions on the fly.
Old Gods take center stage (but you can only run one)
According to Blizzard, players can choose to command C’Thun, N’Zoth, Yogg-Saron, or Y’Shaarj, each arriving with four unique abilities that can swing games dramatically. The catch is significant for deckbuilders: you may include only one Old God per deck, forcing a real choice between playstyles rather than simply stacking the biggest threats together.
New keyword: Assemble
The expansion’s headline mechanic is Assemble. Blizzard describes it as a way to create minions “unlike any Hearthstone has seen before,” where you combine minions from a curated pool to form custom creations. In practical terms, it sounds built for players who enjoy tuning their lists around flexible gameplans, with the potential for both value-focused builds and combo-oriented lines depending on what the curated options enable.
Titan-forged join the fight
On the opposing side of the theme, Blizzard says the set introduces the Titan-forged: ancient constructs and defenders created by the Titans to wage war against the Black Empire. Expect these cards to function as the expansion’s counterweight to Old God power spikes, offering new tools and archetype hooks to contest board control and late-game inevitability.
Tavern Pass highlights: two Diamond Legendaries
Blizzard is also pushing the expansion’s Reign of the Black Empire Tavern Pass, which it says includes two Diamond Legendary cards (Ammunae and Rajh), plus packs, XP boosts, cosmetics, and additional items. If you’re the type of player who likes to stay current across multiple modes and reward tracks, this is positioned as the primary “bundle of everything” for the new cycle.
New earn-and-redeem system: Tavern Rewards
Alongside the expansion launch, Blizzard introduced Tavern Rewards, described as an ongoing program where eligible purchases in the Hearthstone Battle.net Shop earn a currency called Tavern Tender. Blizzard’s pitch is straightforward: earn tender automatically, bank it over time, then redeem it when you want something from the Tavern Rewards Vault.
Blizzard says the Vault will rotate rewards over time, and that the current lineup includes items such as the Welcome Inn Card Back, a random Signature Legendary (Standard), hero skins (including Annhylde and Ice Lord Malfurion), and Reign of the Black Empire packs. Blizzard also notes Tavern Rewards is available in all regions except Mainland China.
What Mac gamers should know
For MacGaming.com readers, the big takeaway is content cadence: Blizzard is delivering a full-size set drop with a new keyword and a strong deckbuilding constraint, which typically reshapes the ladder and the early meta for weeks. If you play competitively (or just like experimenting), the “one Old God per deck” rule should make for clearer identity-driven lists, while Assemble looks aimed at players who enjoy discovery, modularity, and creative lines.
We’ll also be watching how the new Tavern Rewards economy lands for regular players—especially whether the rotating Vault feels generous, or if it becomes another layer of optimization alongside the Tavern Pass.
