Overview
BlackStump is a free-to-play cozy cooperative life simulator where up to 8 players work together to mend natural and spiritual connections across abandoned landscapes. It leans into a gentle, restorative vibe—less about competition and more about collaboration, discovery, and creative problem-solving. The game’s defining hook is that your voice is more than just a way to coordinate: it’s part of how you experience and navigate the world.
Co-op First: Built Around Friends
BlackStump is designed with co-op at the center. You and your group can jump into a shared space and take on bite-sized activities and minigames by interacting with wisps. These encounters act as social anchors—things you stumble across while exploring that naturally turn into “everyone come over here” moments.
Progress is most satisfying when you pool what you’ve found and coordinate your efforts. You’ll combine resources to appease spirits roaming the land, turning what could be a solitary gathering loop into a shared plan: who’s collecting, who’s scouting, and who’s bringing what to the next spirit encounter.
Explore an Island Full of Activities
Exploration is framed as a relaxed, curiosity-driven loop. The island is dotted with activities to try, and the game encourages organic group play—discover something interesting, then invite friends to join in. That structure makes BlackStump a good fit for casual sessions where players may drift in and out of objectives and simply enjoy being in the space together.
Proximity Chat: Your Voice as a Gameplay Tool
Proximity voice chat is a core feature, not an afterthought. As you move through the world, you can speak naturally with nearby friends without relying on an external voice app. It strengthens immersion and makes coordination feel immediate—calling someone over, splitting up to search, or regrouping when you find something worth investigating.
The game also teases that the world itself may respond, adding a light layer of mystery to the otherwise cozy tone. If you enjoy social exploration games where communication is part of the texture of play, BlackStump leans hard into that fantasy.

About the Project
BlackStump was created as a Senior Capstone project for RPI's Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences program. That context helps explain its experimental, community-driven feel: it’s a smaller-scope game with a strong central idea—cozy restoration and connection—amplified through voice-driven co-op play.
